Guide to Choose Dining Chairs

For many people, the dining room is the most important room in the house, as it is not only a place to enjoy a meal, but also a place for gathering, conversation, and creating cherished memories. The right chairs bring comfort and harmony to your room, so your dining chairs should be chosen with care and consideration.

Here, we will discuss some of the most important factors to consider when looking for the right dining chairs for your home to help you find the ideal balance between aesthetics and practicality and make an informed decision.

What size chairs should you choose?

For comfort and function, your dining chairs should fit neatly under your table and be compatible with the dining table when it comes to scale. We recommend that you measure your existing dining room furniture first, and select chairs that complement.

Seat Height

The average height of a dining table is between 71 and 81cm and you need to allow a minimum of 25 to 30cm from the seat to the tabletop, which means that the height of a dining chair seat should be between 46 and 51cm. For the most comfortable size, you also need to take into account the thickness of the table apron, the height of the diner and the material (for example, upholstered dining chairs will compress, so may allow for more room once you’re sat on them). These measurements are important to ensure you have enough room for your legs.

Seat Width

The seat width is the measurement across the widest part of the seat. It determines how much space you have to sit comfortably. A width of around 41 to 51cm is generally suitable for most people. Make sure the seat is wide enough so that people don't feel cramped, especially if the seat has armrests.

Armrest Height

If you prefer dining chairs with armrests, consider the height of the armrests. The armrests should fit comfortably under the table without restricting movement. The standard armrest height (from the seat to the top of the armrest) is usually 18 to 23cm, which provides enough support without taking up too much space.

The exact size depends on the style of chair. You can find detailed measurements, including width, depth and height, etc. of all our dining chairs for sale in the individual product descriptions.

How many chairs should you have around the table?

The number of chairs depends on the size of the table and the width of the chairs. Ideally, you should place each chair about 15cm apart, leaving about 90cm between the chair and any furniture or walls behind it. This will give guests enough space to eat and elbow room, and avoid chairs bumping together or making the table look overcrowded with too many chairs.

Which style suits your room?

Now that you know how many chairs you can fit around your dining table and have an idea of the size of chair you want, let's look at the styles.

Side Chairs and Armchairs

The side chairs are those chairs without arms. Dining chairs without armrests have a modern, simple look and are usually easier to fit under a dining table and are ideal for dining rooms with limited space since they take up less space.

The dining chairs with armrests can provide extra support and comfort for people who prefer a more leisurely dining experience and add a sophisticated touch to the room. They also look good in the bedroom or on the balcony, as dressing chairs or as accent chairs.

Upholstered Chairs

The upholstered dining chairs take comfort to a new level, adding warmth, colour and texture to your dining room and making it friendlier for a family with children by protecting them from bumps. And the surface, especially the faux leather surface, is fairly easy to clean.

Swivel Chairs and Non-swivel chairs

The swivel dining chairs are becoming increasingly popular. They have a spinning mechanism that allows them to easily swivel 360°. The swivel dining chairs are easy to get in and out of and can also help people to turn from side to side without having to physically move, bringing versatility and practicality to your space.

The Non-swivel dining chairs are very classic and timeless. They are much cheaper than swivel dining chairs and you have more options when it comes to appearance.

Both the swivel and the non-swivel chairs have seats in velvet, fabric and imitation leather and legs in metal and wood.
